Plastic Free Kailua Kick-Off Meeting & Windward Kanu Hawaii Pau Hana

A kick-off meeting for the new Plastic Free Kailua Coalition, an off-shoot of Kokua Hawaii Foundation's Plastic Free Hawaii initiative, and a meet and greet for Kanu Hawaii supporters.

Joint event occurring on Thursday, Sept. 16th. As an important member of the Kailua community, you are cordially invited to attend.

First, this pau hana will serve as a local event for Windward-side Kanu Hawaii supporters to meet and greet, network, and foster support for each other in our commitments. Kanu Hawaii is a network of people working to make Hawaii a model of sustainability and strong community for the world through their pledges. If you haven't heard of http://www.kanuhawaii.org/, that’s okay. All are welcome!

Second, and more importantly, this is the kick-off meeting for the new Plastic Free Kailua (PFK) coalition, an off-shoot of Kokua Hawaii Foundation Plastic Free Hawaii initiative. PFK builds on personal and business-based commitments to reduce the purchase and/or distribution of single-use and disposable plastics such as drink bottles, grocery bags, and deli containers.

We'll meet in the upstairs of Seang’s Thai Restaurant in central Kailua town Thursday, Sept. 16th from 6-9 pm. You can hop on over after the farmer’s market for pupus and great company. At 7pm we will hold a brief meeting discussing the goals and planning milestones of this new venture. We are seeking both committed team members, willing local businesses, and general supporters to move forward.

We also want to promote upcoming Kailua events such as a beach clean-up planned for Saturday, Sept. 25th. Details TBA soon.

We are just weeks away from the launch of our buy local windward campaign. It has been a long year and we encountered many setbacks. Some of you may have noticed the project name and design has changed several times. Unfortunately, our idea was stolen by a contractor who we had approached to help with the project. So we shifted gears and started over. It was a hard lesson for us to learn, just knowing someone would want to prevent such a worthy cause. BUT we came out of it wiser and renewed. We have once again reworked the campaign and are happy to say that we have now completed it.

The ILoveWindward.com - SHOP WHERE YOU LOVE website is now up. Although we are still working on it, windward businesses can go and add discounts to the site. KCOC Light Up Kailua Committee - Looking for volunteers

As many of you know, each year the Kailua Chamber of Commerce sponsors "Light Up Kailua" which puts up the holiday light when entering into Kailua via the Pali. While this event is several months away, we are starting the planning process and are looking for volunteers to join the Light Up Kailua Committee.
We will meet the first Wednesday of each month 2:00 - 3:00 pm at Morning Brew in Kailua. It would be an honor to have you on this committee to help serve the chamber and the community.

Whole Foods coming to Kailua. Is this good or bad?

Workers are preparing for constructions on the corner of Kailua Road and Hinano Way where a new Whole Foods Market will be built.

Kaneohe Ranch said the the project, which is the third phase of its Kailua Town Center redevelopment, will feature a 32,000-square foot Whole Foods and 8,000 square feet of other retail space. There also will be improvements to parking and pedestrian walkways.

The plans call for construction to be completed in the fall of 2011, with the stores opening soon after.
